Historically, the Calabar Port served as an essential focus of maritime trade with the outside world for the Eastern States, acting as a critical natural harbour for the Northern States of Nigeria dating back to pre-colonial and colonial periods. Initially administered privately by standalone shipping operators, the Federal Government took over the facilities in December 1969, vesting control directly in the Nigerian Ports Authority.
The extensive modernization and development of the facility were undertaken during the 3rd National Development Plan (1975–1980) to upgrade the port architecture to handle the accelerating demands of the Nigerian economy. The finalized new port complex layout was formally commissioned on the 9th of June, 1979, lying approximately 83km upstream from the Fairway Buoy.
To scale shipping position tracking accuracy and cargo offloading procedures, the contemporary Calabar Port Complex operates under a decentralized landlord layout. The three principal commercial terminals are leased to world-class concessionaires that maximize logistics flow rates and ensure rapid vessel turnaround times:
Operates under strict compliance with the International Ship and Port-Facility Security (ISPS) Code, ensuring high-security cargo clearance vectors.
Comprehensive jurisdiction over key deep-water Crude Oil Terminals including Antan, Odudu, Yoho, and Qua Iboe.
Features localized industrial infrastructure connections branching to major private and public facilities like NNPC, ALSCON, Dozzy, and Northwest.
Comprises three specialized commercial operating zones: the Old Port, the New Port, and the active maintenance Dockyard.
Maintains a rapid turnaround time index for supply chain tracking, specifically optimized for oil and gas service logistics.
Integrates specialized secondary transport facilities through regional river checkpoints, including the NIWA and McIver jetties.
